Outfits and Alligators

Right before we left to go to Florida (a month ago), I wanted to explain to Austin that we were not going to have a birthday party here in Texas... instead, we were going to go to Florida for a birthday party with his cousin, Andrew.

"Sure mom," he said. "But, since it's my birthday, can we take a helicopter instead of an airplane to Florida this time?"

What? Where do these requests come from?

"No, honey, not this time. Maybe when you are thirty!" When mom is too old to a) plan your parties and b) pay for your parties anymore.

Today in the car on the car ride home, I found a piece of gum in my purse and was thrilled. I haven't chewed gum in years!

Only moments later Austin asked, "Mom, what are you eating?"

"I am just chewing on gum, AJ." I replied.

"Mom, I just LOVE gum!" Austin claimed.

"Austin, I don't think that you have ever had gum."

"Oh." Long pause. "Mom, can I have a piece of gum?"

"No, sweetheart," I answered, "Mommy doesn't want you to have gum until you are five."

"I think that I would rather just wait until I'm ten. Can I have gum when I am ten?"

Ticked at his lack of mathematical reasoning, I replied, "Sure, you can have gum when you are ten."

Austin thought for a long time and then said, "you know what mom... I think that I would rather just have a new outfit and an alligator when I am ten."

So, that's my life folks. I have a three year old who calls his clothes "outfits," expects an alligator at 10 and a helicopter ride at 30....

So, until we move to the swamp (or he becomes an alligator wrestler)... I just want to enjoy every moment of him at 3!
